About AFMA
The American Federation for Medical Accreditation (AFMA) is an association of physicians organized and operated to promote excellence in medicine by:
- establishing minimum education, training, and experience requirements that a physician must meet to be certified by the AFMA in a medical specialty offered by the AFMA;
- devising written and oral examinations to test a physician’s knowledge in a medical specialty offered by the AFMA;
- evaluating the education, training, and experience of a physician that applies for certification in a medical specialty offered by the AFMA against the AFMA’s certification requirements, including testing requirements, for the medical specialty;
- issuing certificates to physicians that meet the medical specialty certification requirements established by the AFMA; and
- periodically reviewing physicians issued a medical specialty certification by the AFMA to determine if the physicians continue to satisfy the AFMA’s medical specialty certification requirements.
Our Mission
AFMA ensures that the certifications it offers maintain high standards and; appropriate internal policies and practices for the administration of examinations for board certification. AFMA is intended to enhance the boards of other accreditation bodies and add an extra dimension that they may not be able to provide, traditionally or politically.
